What happens
A shadow 294 km wide, moving at two kilometres a second
On Wednesday 12 August 2026, a little before sunset, the Moon’s shadow will come in off the Atlantic and cross Spain from the Galician and Asturian coast to the Balearic Islands. Inside a band roughly 294 km wide the Sun will disappear completely for between half a minute and just under two minutes, and the corona — the Sun’s outer atmosphere, normally lost in glare — will become visible to the naked eye.
Two things make this eclipse unlike the ones you may have read about. The first is that it happens with the Sun only a few degrees above the horizon, so an unobstructed western horizon matters more than anything else. The second is that it is short: Spain sits at the end of the shadow’s track, and totality nowhere exceeds 110 seconds. Both facts should shape where you decide to stand.

The Moon takes its first bite out of the Sun's upper right edge. Nothing looks different yet — daylight barely dips until well over half the disc is gone — so the only way to follow this hour is through a certified solar filter.

The light goes wrong
Colours flatten, shadows turn unnaturally crisp, and the air cools by a few degrees. With the Sun already low in the west, the whole sky takes on a metallic quality that photographs never quite capture.

The approach
Turn around. The Moon's shadow is closing on you out of the west at close to two kilometres per second, and from high ground you may see it arrive as a wall of darkness. Venus is already bright in the south-west. Watch pale walls and pavements for rippling shadow bands.

Baily's beads, then the diamond ring
The last sliver of Sun breaks into separate points of light shining through valleys on the Moon's limb. They wink out one by one until a single brilliant bead remains, set against the first faint glow of the corona.

Filters off. The corona appears as a pale, structured halo, with pink prominences along the lunar edge. The horizon glows in every direction because the shadow is only a couple of hundred kilometres wide, and because the Sun sits just a few degrees up, the eclipsed Sun and the sunset colours share the same patch of sky. You have between half a minute and just under two minutes.

Sunlight returns on the opposite limb, and it returns fast. Filters go back on the instant the first bead reappears — this is when most eclipse eye injuries happen, in the excitement of the moment.

Sunset, then the Perseids
The partial phase resumes, but across most of the eastern half of the country the Sun sets before the Moon finishes crossing it — so the day ends with a visibly notched Sun dropping into the horizon. Stay put: the Perseid meteor shower peaks the same night, with no Moon in the sky.

Where you stand decides whether you see a corona or a very deep dusk
The band of totality runs from the Galician and Asturian coast down to the Balearics, clipping 31 provinces and 3,963 of Spain's 8,095 mainland and Balearic municipalities. Step outside it and the corona never appears, no matter how close you get. Every figure below comes from the Instituto Geográfico Nacional.

How high the Sun will be
At maximum the Sun sits 10° above the horizon — about a clenched fist held out at arm's length. Anything taller than that towards the west will hide the eclipse from you.

Cities that see a partial eclipse only
Outside the band the Sun is never fully covered, so the corona, the planets and the sudden darkness do not happen. Several of these cities come agonisingly close — Madrid among them. Magnitude is the fraction of the Sun's diameter the Moon covers, and because the IGN rounds it to two decimals the nearest misses print as 1.00 while still falling short of totality.

Choosing a spot
For this eclipse, the horizon matters more than the weather
Spain sits at the very end of the Moon's shadow track, so the Sun is only 2–12° above the horizon during totality — lowest in the east, highest in Galicia. It sets between 279° and 288° — due west swinging towards west-north-west — and a single hill, a line of trees or an apartment block in that direction is enough to erase the whole event.
Get an open western horizon
Coastlines facing north-west, ridge tops, and the western edges of high plateaus all work. Check the exact spot in the IGN viewer's terrain layer rather than trusting the map — at 2–12° the relief behind the horizon does the deciding.
Aim for the centre line if you can
Totality is longest along the centre of the band, which the IGN places close to Avilés, Oviedo, Aranda de Duero, Soria, Peñíscola and Palma de Mallorca. The difference is real: 110 seconds in western Asturias against 31 seconds in Bilbao, near the northern edge.
Weigh cloud against altitude
Mid-August favours clear evening skies inland; the Cantabrian coast is the gamble, where low cloud at that hour is common. Inland Castile and Aragón trade a slightly lower Sun for much better odds of seeing it. Check AEMET in the days before, and keep a second site in mind.
Arrive absurdly early
The band crosses the country in 7 min 14 s and cannot be rescheduled. Spain expects a large volume of eclipse travel on narrow roads to viewpoints; being stationary an hour before first contact costs you nothing and protects the whole trip.
Stay for the Perseids
The eclipse falls on the peak night of the Perseid meteor shower, and because a solar eclipse requires a new Moon, the sky afterwards is as dark as it gets. The same open site serves both.
Watch, don't only photograph
You get one to two minutes. Set a camera on a tripod and leave it, or skip it entirely. A low Sun near landmarks and ridgelines makes for unusually good wide shots, so a fixed wide-angle frame costs you nothing and captures more than a fumbled telephoto.
Eye safety
The only safe moment to look is totality itself
Before and after totality
Use eclipse glasses or a solar filter certified to ISO 12312-2, and put them on before you look up. Sunglasses, welding glass below shade 12, exposed film, smoked glass and stacked sunglasses are all useless. Retinal damage is painless and can be permanent.
Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need a filter in front of the lens, not behind it. Looking through an unfiltered instrument concentrates the Sun and injures far faster than the naked eye.
Counterfeit glasses circulate before every major eclipse. Buy from a vetted supplier and discard anything scratched or punctured.
During totality
Once the last bead of sunlight disappears and your filter shows nothing at all, take it off. The corona is roughly as bright as a full Moon and there is nothing to protect against. This is the only reason to be inside the band.
Put the filter back on the instant the first bright point returns on the other side of the Moon. That transition is abrupt, and it is where most eclipse eye injuries happen.
If you are outside the band — in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville or anywhere in the southern half — there is no safe moment at all. Keep the filter on from start to finish.
No filter to hand? Project the Sun instead. A pinhole in card, a colander, or the gap between your fingers will cast a crescent-shaped image onto a pale surface. Watching the projection is completely safe.
Before and after
Nothing for 121 years, then three in three
Total eclipses are not rare in themselves — one falls somewhere on Earth every year or two — but the band is narrow, so any given spot waits centuries. Spain's luck runs in clusters, and it is about to have one.

Its band crossed the country on almost the same diagonal. Observatories from across Europe set up camps in Burgos, Palencia and the Balearics; the campaign is still held in the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional's historical archive.

The band crosses the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alborán Sea. The IGN gives up to 4 minutes 48 seconds of totality in Ceuta — more than twice what 2026 offers, with the Sun high in the sky.

An annular eclipse — the ring of fire
The band of annularity runs south-west to north-east across the peninsula and out over the Balearics, again close to sunset.
This eclipse beyond Spain
The umbra begins in the Bering Sea at 17:34 Madrid time and ends in the Atlantic Ocean at 21:58, 264 minutes later. Its route runs Arctic Ocean · north-east Greenland · western Iceland · North Atlantic · northern Spain · Balearic Islands. Greatest eclipse — 2 min 18 s of totality, the longest anywhere — falls over the North Atlantic, about 45 km west of Iceland at 17:47:06 UTC. Eclipse magnitude is 1.0386, the band is at most 294 km wide, and this is member 126 (48 of 72) of its saros series. Spain gets the shortest totality on the track, and the only one at sunset.
