On **Wednesday 12 August 2026**, a little before sunset, the Moon's shadow will come in off the Atlantic and cross Spain from the Galician and Asturian coast to the Balearic Islands. Inside a band roughly 294 km wide the Sun will disappear completely for between half a minute and just under two minutes, and the corona — the Sun's outer atmosphere, normally lost in glare — will become visible to the naked eye.

Two things make this eclipse unlike the ones you may have read about. The first is that it happens with the Sun only a few degrees above the horizon, so an unobstructed western horizon matters more than anything else.
